So this how I set up my SBT with a USB dac:


With the dac connected to the SBT

Go to Settings>Advanced>Applet Installer>Enhanced Digital Output, select
the version 0.10.

On restart there is the choice of two outputs, choose the dac and the
SBT reboots.

To check installation:

go to Settings>Advanced>Audio Settings>Digital Output>Select Audio
Output, select USB-Audio [info].
Return to the previous screen
Select Fixed Volume>check it is set at 100%

If you have followed this routine and have no joy, then it does seem
likely that you are correct with your assumption that the dac does not
work the the SBT.

That's a pity :(
