I have a pair of modified Parrott Zik3 headphones, adapted for those
with hearing problems (mainly giving separate equalization for each ear
matching an audiogram) called PYOUR. Having used them for a while with
my laptop (and squeezelite) I thought it would be useful to try them
with the Touch and EDO and a USB connection to the headphones. This is
specified for the headphones as being 24/48000 on USB.

As is so often the way for me, I didn't start with quite standard
settings (I had C-3PO using pcm/wav on the Touch from past uses), and so
went round almost all the options, always getting either noise (with
pcm/wav) or crackly sound (with flac). I tried all 3 available
non-standard kernel options, the USB 1 hub workaround, a USB hub (no
workaround), different buffer sizes, and so on. On the point of giving
up I went back to basics (but still with C-3PO).

With no hub, no workaround, standard EDO kernel, standard buffers, flacs
supplied at 48000, it all works fine!

If you wonder why I'm using C-3PO for this, one reason is that my
limited hearing means I have to constrain the dynamic range a bit for my
type of music. Classical stuff tends to have very quiet bits and very
loud bits in one piece. To be able to hear the very quiet parts I need
the volume to be increased, which causes the loud parts to damage my
hearing even further. The sox compand options allows me to compress the
volume just a little, and enough to be sensible so that I'm not
adjusting the volume all the time.

The headphones are a great boon for me, allowing me to hear things I
can't normally hear without hearing aids, and with much better quality
than the tiny speakers inside such aids.

Not using my laptop means I spend less time distracting myself tapping
on the keyboard looking at forums, news and such! So I must now shut
the laptop down and get back to the Touch.

Success :)
