I made a few simple checks for alternative streams from WGBH, including checking the Help page, and it looks like they do not provide an alternative to https.
If you don't want to have the old PC on while listening then an easy alternative for someone with basic computer skills (no soldering) is to by a Raspberry Pi and run LMS on that. For around 50USD (maybe less), including micro-SD card, power supply and plastic case, you could have an always-on server that uses very little electricity or space. Stick it behind your broadband router and (mostly) forget about it. Probably best to get one with Ethernet built in.
