In my case it was not wifi with the B&W speakers - but that was simply an example of a wireless remote (I think it uses infrared but I don't have it to hand). In that particular case the speakers plugged into a Linux player running SqueezePlay via USB. The remote acts like a "HID" and SqueezePlay was happy enough with the commands. If you search the forum for other posts of people using IR to connect to a Raspberry Pi running pCP you will see how to teach the OS to interpret regular TV-style remotes.
