My AE86 is having a similar problem. The gauge never reads above 3/4 full
and the last 1/4 goes really fast.

Do you really have to pull the tank to get at the sender gauge? It looks to
me like there's a little plate in the trunk deck that the wires pass
through. If the gauge is in the rear of the tank, and I'm pretty sure it is
(hard braking lights up the low fuel indicator light), you may be able to
access it by removing this plate. Note, however, that I've never actually
tried this, it just looks like it might be easier than removing the tank.

BTW, does anyone else have trouble actually putting gas in the tank? In all
the pumps I've tried, if I squeeze the trigger all the way down it acts like
the tank is full and shuts off. I have to pump gas with the trigger about
1/2 way depressed. Sound familiar to anyone? It's maddening and I feel
like a complete idiot every time.
