Dear TP-devel folks:

Is anyone familiar with Samuel Penn's world and starmap generation projects?

http://mapcraft.glendale.org.uk/worldgen

It looks like he's started from a Traveller-like starmap database, and
expanded it to randomly generate worlds, systems, names, and planetary
surface maps and navigate the generated galaxy with a REST-style http
resource browser. His development environment is Java/Eclipse, if it
matters, and he generates Celestia-compatible surface maps.

I'll plan to look over his source code and drop him a note; it looks like
his general orientation to re-use is to explicitly label his code and docs
with a BSD lic.

Any thoughts on his project? Does it seem familiar?

I'm looking for my next step after the system name generator (
http://tpnames.appspot.com) and was considering planet descriptions and disk
pictures. At the same time, I've been trying to scan the rule-sets to see
if I can figure out what parts of the description ought to be (or might be)
driven by the ruleset, versus put in for random flavor. I haven't managed
to get very far in that direction. To start, I plan that the default system
generator will generate a single significant terrestrial-ish planet per
system, and take options for greater variety of planet and system
generation.

Thanks all,

Jeff Miller
