You're right, but I've made that change intentionally.
Before, the external links were renderer the way you suggested, and the 
result was that the wrapping was messy (the icon was often seen alone at 
one end of the line, the label starting on the next line), for *all* 
browsers.
So with the increased usage of external links (i.e. InterWiki, 
InterTrac), pages were starting to look really ugly and I felt the need 
to change that.

If someone finds a workaround that restore the complete link behavior 
for ie (well, we can still follow the link, can't we?), then please do 
so, but please please don't reintroduce the old ugly look of external links!

PS: It would be interesting to check with IE7. If it's fixed there, I'd 
say we should keep the current way.
