I agree, having this as a core part of trac would be a very good thing. Spam is a problem and is only getting worse by the day so integrating mechanisms like this into the core probably makes a lot of sense. In the short term it just makes it difficult for people like me to test the changes. Plugins are easy to test, changes to the core code are more difficult.
If we keep having more trouble with spam I will give this a try. By the way, thanks for all your hard work on this.
