I agree with cmlenz. IMHO there're no other ways than either just use the
deprecated `start` attribute in XHTML Strict or switch to XHTML
Transitional. According to the W3C you should use counters instead of the
`start` and `value` attributes, but this is currently only supported by
Opera.
