Upgrading SQLite to the latest version 3.2.7 is what did the trick. After
that, it appears to make no difference whether PySQL 1.1.6 or 2.0.5 is
used. I reverted the patch from {{{node_change.change}}} to
{{{`change`}}}. All the unit tests pass for me.
I still haven't heard from any postgres people on whether or not this
breaks anything for them.
I'd be really stoked if this actually makes it into version 1.0.
