AFAICT, the log file is updated in real time.

However, the "tail -f" command usually sleeps for a couple of seconds
(up to 5 secs) before scanning the file for a length change.

Have a look at the man page: the '-s' option enables you to specify
the sleep time, i.e. the polling time.
