Once or twice I've seen programs that couldn't figure out machine's domain name -- changing "search" to "domain" in /etc/resolv.conf fixed them even though every fine manual out there claims the two are equivalent. It could be the password database, too: e.g. "old" users are in LDAP, new ones in passwd, and MTA is not configured to check LDAP. Could be any number of things...
