There shouldn't be. Something like a VPN should be transparent to a server, because what VPN does is effectively simulates the remote machine as a machine on the local network. The only real different is performance. If the pages are too big and/or loading too slowly maybe it can trigger that error. Otherwise, it could be a fault in the VPN with the connection dropping occasionally.
