This was my initial impression too. As seen other places is this thread, things
are not as hopeless as they appear at first sight -- there are ways to get from
wiki to LaTeX/docbook.

But -- as far as other html->pdf/ps converters, I found:

  http://cutycapt.sourceforge.net/

It uses Webkits rendering engine to convert html/webpages to, among other
things, pdf. I verified that a quick capture of http://www.tokyo-np.co.jp/ got
me a useable multi-page pdf, with text as text (eg I could copy-paste
kankji/kana) and in-line images.

It might be worth a look.

Binaries are available for win32 -- And I got it to build easily enough on
Ubuntu Hardy with backports enabled in /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy-backports main universe multiverse
restricted
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy-backports main universe
multiverse restricted

A similar utility using IEs rendering engine also exists:

  http://iecapt.sourceforge.net/

Please note that cutycapt has support for javascript, java and plugins -- and
is really meant as an automatic screen-capture tool. I do like the fact that it
allows seamless integration of inline images -- but you might want to disable
everything else if this is used in an automated script of some sort.

I guess you'd need to add a few css rules for optimal output, and probably you
won't get any clickable table of contents etc.

Either way -- please keep us posted with your conclusions.

Best regards,
