Easy fix (assuming your ldap server is firewalled off etc): change "access to *" from "by * none" to "by * read" in your slapd.conf (or do what you did and use a non-anonymous bind). Yes, "by * none" worked in 2.2 with "by anonymouth auth" access to password and and "by * read" access to uid etc. They've changed something in 2.4 and forgot to tell us what it is.
