I've been checking google and the list for some time now, and saw
similar issues but never with a solution allongside.

I followed my tests since this post :
* I upgraded the debian package for trac to the latest stable version
(rebuilt a package), but I still couldn't get auth to work on /login
* I tried others auth modules (external auth) - but the result is the
same
* I tried other directories for auth (/login2 for example) - but trac
tells me that there is no handler for this path without asking me for
http auth first
