I also found trac very slow and after reading what you have written
about it I came up with a solution.
<Location /tracProj>
SetInputFilter None ## This line disable deflate module
only for this site. <---
SetHandler mod_python
PythonInterpreter main_interpreter
PythonHandler trac.web.modpython_frontend
PythonOption TracEnv /var/trac/proj
</Location>
