Recently my trac.htdigest authentication file was mysteriously wiped out, with only a single (new) user remaining. I have scoured my log files and it does not appear that my machine has been compromised. I checked the last modification time of the trac.htdigest file and cross-referenced it with the Apache access logs, and at exactly (within ms) the time that a new user registered with the site the trac.htdigest file was also modified, severely. What happened? More importantly, how do I fix this from happening again?
