I cannot answer all your questions but perhaps I can help with '.egg' ~
think of an egg as a compressed folder that python is happy to recurse
into (similar to the way recent versions of windoze are happy to
'explore' into .zip files as if they were folders), so a __file__
location from _inside_ what appears to be a file on your file system is
quite normal.
