I had read a recommendation to configure Apache to be a reverse proxy to tracd, 
which is working fine for us.  I had viewed it as a simple approach, but 
obviously it does not lend itself to also passing through authentication.

So, I will look into just using Apache.  I am very interested in what the 
results of the work you described as:
