It may depend on how many projects you have and more importantly on the plugins that you have installed (i.e. if the plugins work with 0.12 or have a version that does). We do not use many plugins.
I am not sure what you mean by "change the layout" ~ there were a few cosmetic enhancements but nothing that caused any problems for me or my users. I would recommend you try out an offline upgrade of a few projects rather than invest time in supporting the old version in parallel.
