One thing that does worry me though is that there is no info being
pushed into the database. Does it store in memory items before commiting
to the database?

I think it's the number of revs that has the bigger impact. So if that's
30Gb of small changes, that'll take a *long* time to index. If it's a
few
dozen changes to really large files, it would have been done before you
sent your first post. :) (I'm guessing from your email address it's
probably the former though).
