It depends on WHAT you want to put in the left menu.

Moving an existing menu from the top bar to the left side is an easy
task to do, thanks to the clean (X)HTML code generated by the Trac
engine and the CSS style files.
For example: http://www.cmlenz.net (nice) or http://anciens.enib.fr (ugly)

If you want to add other kind of items in the "left" menu, I guess you
need to add or write some extensions, based on the plug-in
architecture (e.g.: WebAdmin)
