Sounds like it would be easier to merge it into trunk than keep updating a patch, is there any downside to this "feature" seems like it would be "a good thing".
AFAICT, we have not fully agreed about the exact signature of this interface, so I think another round in the trac-dev ML is required before we can start thinking to merge it to the trunk - there's no guarantee that it will be merged at some point.
