There is a project configuration option that already exist to get a
dropdown box with the login of the known users:

restrict_owner, see http://projects.edgewall.com/trac/wiki/TracIni#ticket

Hello,

I am running Trac 0.9.5 on an Athlon64 Gentoo server. I would like to
customize the exisiting field 'assign to' to be a dropdown so that the users
can pick the pre-defined users (email addresses). I have been searching the
web and this is about the extent of what I have found:
Main Templates

It is also possible to use your own modified versions of the Trac
ClearSilver templates. Note though that this technique is not recommended
because it makes upgrading Trac rather problematic: there are unfortunately
several dependencies between the templates and the application code, such as
the name of form fields and the structure of the template data, and these
are likely to change between different versions of Trac.

If you absolutely need to use modified templates, copy the template files
from the default templates directory (usually in found in
$prefix/share/trac/templates) into the templates directory of the project
environment. Then modify those copies to get the desired results.

Is my only choice to create a new custom ticket field for this in the
trac.ini? Can someone point me to a good document on simple customization
of the site templates? Or without customizing the template, tell me a way
to get email notification working by using Aliases? (i.e. Rob à
