As far as I can tell there is not (at least as of 0.9.5).  This is
primarily because the ticket status is tightly coupled with the
ticketing workflow.  My understanding from reading and from this list
is that there is code in place to allow at least some degree of
workflow customization - including adding custom statuses.  I believe
the updated code is currently scheduled for release with 0.10 or 0.11.

I need to do the same thing, so if anyone has better information or if
I've misunderstood what I've read, please correct me.

I think, he was asking about ticket
status(new,assigned,closed,fixed etc), not ticket
type(task/enhancement/defect etc).
