You were right. Apparently the rpm install put a sample trac.conf file in /etc/httpd/conf.d/ containing the following:
Alias /trac/ "/usr/share/trac/htdocs/"
It seems to me that sample files should not be put in places where they are active by default.

Apparently it's not only the wiki:
https://spt.uchicago.edu/trac/changeset/1 -> The requested URL
/trac/changeset.png/1 was not found on this server.
On the other hand, this works:
https://spt.uchicago.edu/trac/about
I bet you have a nasty rewrite rule somewhere in your apache conf, like
trac/(.*)/(.*) -> trac/\1.png/\2
I don't think so. I've attached my entire httpd.conf file (I did not before for security reasons, in case we messed up and left some obvious exploit in it). I have not edited any other apache files for trac, unless the trac rpm install script does something by default.
