Remembering the folded/unfolded position is not difficult (like sphinx does 
with the sidebar in the py3k doc), so that's a way to have a per-user option 
without having to configure anything.
I also don't think some users are opposed to *any* kind of folding, depending 
on what is folded and the users, there might be positive or negative reactions, 
and the difficult part is to find a balance.
(Also reactions to changes are often negative, regardless of the kind of 
change.  Giving some time to get used to new features is usually a good idea.)

Another possible solution is to make the end key jump to the last message, 
rather than the end of the page.

I'll wait for a few more opinions and see.
