If you feel the need to correct a typo, you can do it with a follow-up post.  
The problem is that while you may only use this rationally, other users will 
use it in harmful ways.

Following a tracker issue history can be confusing enough without having to 
assume that a reply doesn't refer to the current text of a message, but a 
previous revision.

And as Martin says, if the email notifications differ from the post you see 
when opening the issue in the web interface, that's just as annoying and 
confusing.
