Now that I'm using Tracker more, I have some suggestions for enhancements to
the tracker-search-tool, based on my experience so far. I realize the
development focus is on the indexing at present, so these ideas may be more
for down the line, but I figured I might as well put the thoughts down now:
1. Show total results found. (Currently this doesn't seem to be anywhere.)
2. Have a drop-down box with the following options. Multiple options could
be selected:
- Metadata only.
- Filename/path only. (shows results that have text in file name or
path only)
- Full text search only.
- All results.
(This could be an after-search filter, or a pre-search query.)
3. Help button that explains the search syntax. (ie, how do you use AND/OR,
exact phrase searches, etc.)
4. Add *.rb, *.rhtml, *.rjs and *.yaml to list of files that are considered
"Development". (Currently none of my Ruby files show up under Development,
only when All Files is selected.)
5. A "preferences" dialog box that allows the user to modify the file
extensions used for each type of file (video, audio, development, etc.) Or
if that's done by MIME type rather than file extension, then allow the user
to add/remove mime types.
6. Show the number of hits for each document found. Helps to narrow down the
search.
7. Allow the result list to be sorted by number of hits, or alphabetically
by filename, or by full path (so all files in same folder are together; that
seems to be current default).
8. This may not be possible, but it would be awesome if for each search
result you could right click and select "show next" and it would show the
next snippet of text from the file where the search term appeared. That way
you can cycle through the results within a file, without necessarily having
to open the file. Again, this is for the purpose of finding the desired file
from a list of results.
