Here a noob myself, here's my experience:

You terminate tracker with
$ tracker-control -t

Start it with 
$ tracker-control -s

After restaring it, you must start the icon with
$ tracker-status-icon &

To watch the progress (same info you get clicking on the icon)
$ tracker-status

Throthling might be at work here... Leave the pc alone for half a minute
and see if it pickups.

None of the 0.6.x package are neccesary (i would avoid them)
