It was a long, winded and bumpy road, but after many months of reverse engineering and hacking on Netatalk 3.1 finally supports Apple Spotlight for searching Netatlk AFP servers from OS X AFP clients. <http://netatalk.sourceforge.net/3.1/htmldocs/configuration.html#idp139639144355312> Without Tracker this would have not been possible.
