There's never been a delete command prior to FMI 2.5, and FMI 2.5 is currently only on the 1200/1300/1400, which don't have a breadcrumb problem. The new units are smart enough not to display the same waypoint twice.
Actually, it's more complicated than that. With FMI 2.5 they don't care about the name, they go by a numeric ID. So you could have multiple waypoints with the same name, so long as they've got different IDs.
