Did you try using rake db:migrate? In theory, that should preserve  
your fixutres and update them and the table schema at the same time,  
though I would certainly recommend having a full backup of the db  
before you try it. However, it's quite possible that it might fail  
because of the nubmer of changes. Also, which db are you using?

I'm trying to sort out a better what for people to upgrade, including  
porting their settings from a previous installation, so I need  
information on where things are going wrong.

system from time to time.
