Hey folks, I've got this blessing/curse of emailing about a problem and then finding the solution minutes later. I found this bug http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/8616 where the column names have to be strings rather than symbols for rename column migrations to work under sqlite3. It looks like its in edge rather than 1.2.3 so I'll give my committer access a whirl and change the migration sometime today.
