That's exactly what needed to be done -- change the final RewriteRule
in public/.htaccess to point to .fcgi instead of .cgi  -- and upon
opening the .htaccess file to make the change, I see that this very
issue is addressed in the .htaccess file itself.

Aargh! How did I miss this? Must learn to read for comprehension
sooner or later.
