For Ubuntu, I already had 1.8.6, but I did have to install some extra packages for libxslt to get it to run. After I added the libxslt1-dev, libxslt-ruby and libxslt-ruby-1.8. I am not sure that I needed them all, but figured there was little risk to adding them.
