The January 2011 Issue of Heritage Iron has a four page article about the
Central Foundry Division of General Motors foundry in Defiance, Ohio. A former
employee of the facility writes the article. Photos are not available, as GM
did not permit photographs being taken by individuals in the facility.
This facility was neither a job shop nor lean, but I find it of interest. This
facility did perform contract manufacturing for various non-GM automotive
manufacturers such as AMC, Chrysler, Isuzu, Toyota, Consolidated Diesel, and
Ford.
One customer was the Detroit Diesel division of General Motors. This facility
is of interest to tractor enthusiasts because two cycle Detroit Diesel engines
were used in tractors sold by a number of manufacturers including Oliver, Allis
Chalmers, Massey Ferguson, Dynahoe, John Deere, Steiger, Terex, and others. I
was first exposed to this line of engines used in construction equipment while
a military service member.
Rather than leaning this facility with lessons learned at NUMMI, GM apparently
chose to scale back the foundry and outsource much work to facilities in other
countries. The scaled back facility is now part of GM Powertrain.
Some technical details about foundries can be gleaned from the article.
