I've tested on a Ubuntu 24.04 VM, using podman 4.9.3. No problem with
the '\t' separator.

So it is either a problem of the older podman version, or (more likely)
your shell has transformed '\t' into spaces.

I have applied your patch in the repositories. Will be available with
the upcoming Emacs 31.1 as well as with the next Tramp ELPA version 2.8.2.1.
