Hi Doug,
You don't have to use the 835 for the EFT payment transaction to the bank.
ACH format or proprietary is fine.
See page 15 of the 835 implementation guide.

Subject: 835 EFT Question

I'm wondering if anyone can answer this question for me. I work for a Payer
organization and we are developing the 835 transaction including
transmission of electronic funds.

We would like to send the remittance advice (information only) to the
provider via the 835 and send the actual payment to the bank via a separate
transaction.

Question: Are we required to send electronic funds to the bank in an
835 format -or- can we use another standard bank transaction to accomplish
the funds transfer (ie. proprietary or ACH format).
