CMS will submit a compliance plan extension on behalf of each contractor covering
their Medicare operations. The compliance plan extension for any non-Medicare
operations must be filed by the company responsible for those operations. The
extension request for Medicare will not cover any non-Medicare operations. Filing an
extension request should not impede forward progress. A covered entity may file an
extension request and still be compliant by October, 2002. CMS is encouraging covered
entities to move forward with their compliance plans.

Can someone tell me if CMS is filing for an extension? If so, does that
include all the entities within the CMS umbrella or do the entities have the
capabilities to decide not to file for the extension. For example: can a
Medicare carrier in any state decide to move forward with the 10/16/02
implementation date even though CMS files for the extension.
