Vince, The Taxonomy Code (which occurs in various places in the three claim transactions) is somewhat like the old Provider Specialty Code. It has no relationship with any Tax ID.
You can see a list of the current Taxonomy Codes from Washington Publishing Company. (http://www.wpc-edi.com/codes) Select the option “To view the lists without logging in, …”. Then select Provider Taxonomy Codes.
Note that the Taxonomy Code is Required in the May 2000 implementation guides. One of the changes in the various Addenda was to make it Situational.
