Anne,
I agree that having multiple versions/layouts for the U277 will make providers revolt. The regulation gives them all an out, since they may require that a "mutually agreeable" format be used, and dictate back to the Payer, who may then need to support as many formats as they have providers! The regulation does indicate the use of "ANSI ASC X12.317, Version 003070, Release 7, Sub-release O, October 1996, Electronic Health Care Claim Status Notification". Doesn't this clear up issues about what guide to use? Since they legislated the "standard" and not an individual implementation guide, the providers will have to accept proprietary versions of the Standard, at a time when they are struggling to meet the HIPAA requirements. It could be overwhelming if doing business in multiple states and payers adopt another "version" of the 277 to meet business needs, etc. Ideally, it would be nice for everyone to have one implementation guide to adhere to.
