CMS logs half-million applications for HIPAA deadline extension The Centers for
Medicare & Medicaid Services today said it has received more than 500,000
applications for a one-year extension of the Oct. 15 deadline for complying
with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act's transactions and
code sets standards. HIPAA-covered entities, which include hospitals,
that did not apply for the extension are expected to be in compliance
with the transactions and code sets regulation as of today. On Oct. 15, CMS
announced it would create a new office within the agency to handle HIPAA
