The 837 professional claim has a line item control number in a 2400-level REF segment so that a provider can assign a specific number to each claim line, instead of relying on the auto-incrementing LX segment. Our claims department needs to track this number throughout the adjudication process to identify service lines on the 835 when claims are split, lines unbundled, etc. Is there a similar line item control number on the 837 institutional claim? Some of the text in the 837I IG mentions such a number, but I can't find an appropriate REF segment in the IG, nor is it in the addenda. Should I just use the auto-number from the LX segment on institutional claims?
