Yes it is possible, but not very soon.

1.0.x branch is out fo target for changes like that;
1.1.0 too (its roadmap is pretty much drawn, it's just matter of
squashing some bugs left. Hopefully, we'll achieve some real progress
during my upcoming vacations).
1.2.0 is a good candidate, but neverthless a fair amount of changes are
needed.

Anyway, because this is exactly the direction I'd like to impress to
future transcode release (more focus on modern and free formats like
theora/vorbis/dirac, better support for acting as streaming source and
recording), I'll do my best to support those kinds of projects.
