I had a very similar idea some months ago. I thought it would be nice
and easy to extend YUV4MPEG instead to restart from scratch.
I cannot afford[1] that but I will surely support anyone interested.

Probably mkv is overfeatured, and unfortunately integrating into a C
application isn't trivial: there is libmkv, developed by handbrake devs
(handbrake.m0k.org), but it is not complete last time I've checked.
Anyway, it is still an option.
