No, 720x576 is the default size. Every value surrounded by square
brackets is the default one.

No, it isn't :)
PAL settings are the defaults.

Every image size is fine, except for insanely high values (HD resolution
are fine, the limit is roughly 1.5x per dimension, ~4x area).

Autoprobing is supposed to do the trick and adjust the settings
automagically. In fact, I don't still quite understood why your first
issue was misbehaving.
