I have a better solution, at least for my case. xvidcore 1.2.1 did not
produce a pkgconfig file or any util that the configure script could
locate to determine the CFLAGS and LDFLAGS for using xvid. In checking
out my custom rolled packages of xvidcore from the past, even in the
1.0.x series I did not end up with a pkgconfig file or anything of the
likes. I manually created one.

of error on my system. I did have to add a CFLAG at configure
time because for some reason the configure scripts were failing to
handle xvid support because they didn't include -lpthread.
However, I'm not sure what CFLAGS you removed, and I'm guessing
that it was only for the linkage of tcmodinfo related files?
