I'm happy to inform you that the bug is *not* in transcode-1_1 :-D therefore I 
will not file a bug.

Maybe something to do with the version of linker?
$ gcc --version
gcc (Debian 4.3.3-3) 4.3.3

$ ld --version
GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Debian) 2.19.1
